The Hingakawa Women's Association is the producer of the exceptional Rwandan Abakundakawa coffee, aptly named, as Abakundakawa means ‘People Who Love Coffee’ in Kinyarwanda. This care is evident from the consistently high quality of their coffee which rose to fame through the Cup of Excellence program.

Mostly grown on small holdings, these African Arabica coffee beans are cultivated on the mountains of Gakenke district and picked by hand only when ripe. The area benefits from a micro-climate and, along with high elevation and rich volcanic soils, it produces a nuanced coffee with balanced sweet and floral notes. As you would expect, this coffee is organic and Fairtrade, and brings to these communities a much-needed revenue.

Abakundakawa has become so appreciated, and demand for it so sustained that Abakundakawa has grown rapidly and had to add a second washing station to keep up, expanding its membership from 180 to nearly 2,000 coffee farmers since it was founded in 2004.

This exceptional African washed Arabica coffee is comparable in range of flavours and strength to our Kenyan / Colombian blend. We sell these beans as a full medium roast, which is a bit less strong than a continental roast but still very flavoursome.

Grown at altitudes of 1,800-2,200 meters above sea level

Harvested between March and May

Milled by washing

Has the aroma of plum, black tea and honey

Our coffee beans are roasted by eye by our experienced roaster with no computer controlled temperature profiles to make the decisions. This is just one aspect of the care we use to maintain the fine flavour our customers expect.

Did you know our ordering system allows you to create your own blends? Order each component of the blend separately and than tell us what do do in the special information box. We can then blend it and if required grind it, saving you a potentially messy kitchen worktop

Blending tip: when deciding on a mixed roast blend it usually works better to have more of the milder roast, less of the stronger.

Blending tip: even the strongest roast can be mixed with a normal tasting blend - so long as you use very little. Start by trying one part in four.
